Celebrating creative women: MISSBISH x The Creator Class
Last month we asked women from all around the world to submit their work — here's to them.

Last month, The Creator Class and MISSBISH partnered to shed light on only some of the amazing women creatives working worldwide — because celebrating women and fighting for equal representation shouldn’t just be a day-long or month-long effort. Below, find a roundup of some of our favourite creatives, along with who drives their ambition:

Pamela Des Barres hands down. She revolutionized vintage dressing in the 60s while being in one of the first all girl rock bands, Girls Together Outrageously on Frank Zappa’s label Bizarre Records. Throughout this period and well into her adulthood she kept a journal which she later turned into a series of memoirs. Her impact on the trajectory of fashion in that decade still echoes today despite her not receiving due credit.

Carmen Dell’Orefice is the world’s oldest model as she actively works at the age of 85. As she continues to pursue her career she proves that her energy, confidence and self-love are the components in which defines her individuality as opposed to a number. As the discussion of age continues to be a taboo in our society, especially for older women, Dell’Orefice defies the stereotypes in taking initiative to eliminate agism among elder women. The beauty of women is not solely based on our appearance but of our intellect and creativity.

Lauryn Hill is definitely a huge inspiration, I think she is a really well rounded human – she seems really intelligent and is amazingly talented but also comes across as so grounded and gracious which I think is a really great quality to have in a role model, especially for someone who is as widely known as she is in the world.

My mom, and great grandmother. Also Yesjulz and Oprah. I probably wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing without my great grandmother — I grew up making clothes with her and it’s been something I’ve always done subconsciously.

Virginia Woolf. This woman has taught me to understand the human loneliness and sensuality, and the consciousness towards Nature which could be a remedy to our suffering soul.

My biggest female role model is Dani Roche (@daniesque) – creative director of Kastor & Pollux. Home grown in Toronto and now a friend of mine, she continues to astound me with her hard work and dedication. From the launch of her own brand, Biannual Brand, to the visually pleasing projects she brings to life with her team, there is nothing more motivating and inspiring to me as a creator.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?
I come from a long line of women who are as we say in Spanish “fuerte”. my grandmother who is now 73 gave up her youth to marry at 18 and then work in Cuban internment camps in order to gain her freedom from “the revolution/barbudos” or as some may know, Castros regime. literally working as a political slave for 5 years until finally she moved her entire family to the United States and never looked back for 45 years. and my mother, first generation American in my family who had me and my younger brother by the age of 22, experiencing homelessness, domestic violence in her 5 year relationship with my brothers father and other boyfriends. being a single mother with no support or family unit. then theres me.

I’m 18 years old. due to my mothers depression she picked up a terrible drinking habit when I was young. by the age 7 I was taking care of myself And my younger brother full time. cooking, cleaning, bath times, bed times, getting ready for school, school pickups etc… until I was 16 and her drinking slowed down a bit. on a happier note I realized I love singing, dancing, poetry, expressing myself throughout the years.i also discovered my love for modelling around 14. since then I’ve been hooked on it. constantly setting up shoots and participated in numerous events for modelling up until last year when I managed to graduate high school and got signed to my first agency. I’ve got a long way to go but my story doesn’t end until I’m successful. I can do ANYTHING in this world because my tough background made me stronger. a fighter, survivor and role model.

NAME: Bianca Harris (nominated by Rebecca Mudrick)
IG HANDLE: @iambiancaharris / @wipptoronto
CITY: Toronto, Canada
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
I am choosing to nominate Bianca Harris because she is such an inspiration to me. The WIPP C.R.E.A.M podcast helped me to discover the creative direction I want to take in my career as a marketer. Bianca truly embodies WIPP’s mission to empower women in their career and lives. Not only does she produce this inspiring content, she offers opportunities to women trying to expand themselves. After I reached out to Bianca, she took a chance on me as a marketing student and offered me the opportunity to work for her at her company. Bianca Harris is a real female inspiration because she is leveraging her own success in her creative industry to help other women find and follow their own creative path.

NAME: Kenya Jade Pinto
IG HANDLE: @kenyajade
CITY: Ottawa, Canada
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
It’s honestly difficult for me to pick just one female role model because I am so fascinated and inspired by so many different women for different reasons.

From my mother, for being bold and having the courage to move across the world and raise a child in a foreign land; to Rupi Kaur, for so eloquently speaking about her experiences as a Canadian woman of colour; to my boss, Brittany Twiss, a lawyer and the Executive Director of Level, (a Canadian charity in Toronto which uses law to level the playing field for marginalized communities worldwide) for her steadfast integrity, humility, and dedication to doing what is right; to two local Ottawa business women I bet you don’t (but should!) know about, Nadine Hogan and Heather Andrews, for having the tenacity and drive to build something out of nothing.

I am inspired by something different in each of these women, and as I forge forward on an unconventional career path, I will keep “paying attention”—finding these qualities in women who inspire and push me, and living intentionally so that others can see the good in me, too.
